Richard Gao — Global Citizen and World Traveller
“We are thrilled to have this bull running through China's shops.”
Richard Gao
As the lead manager of Matthews China Fund, Richard Gao has travelled back and forth between the United States and China, three to four times each year, since 1997. Richard says he doesn't mind the travel schedule because it gives him a chance to "get back home". He was born in Guangzhou, and his family still lives in China. Richard began his career at the Bank of China in 1989 before travelling to the United States to continue his education. Richard received a B.A. in Literature from Guangdong University, as well as an M.B.A. from the Dominican University of California. He started working at Matthews Funds in 1997 as a China Analyst and has been the portfolio manager of the China Fund since that time.
Richard has managed to use his first hand knowledge of China to generate consistently superior results. Being fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese and Shanghainese provides significant advantages when he is speaking with the local business leaders and government officials. Richard correctly identifed several trends taking place in China, including the growing consumer middle class and their capacity to spend more money on food, housing, technology and transportation. He uses first hand research and direct visits to build a diversified portfolio of China holdings. Under Richard Gao's leadership, the Matthews China Fund has established one of the best track records of any emerging market funds. As one of our selected Stock Money Masters, we are thrilled to have this bull running through China's shops.
